Personal fitness trainers are exercise and nutrition experts, who specialize in teaching and motivating clients to lead healthier lives. As the health and fitness industry in the U.S. grows, these fitness professionals are in demand across the country. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, employment in the field is projected to grow nationwide by 13 percent from 2018 to 2028, faster than the average for all occupations. This growth will account for at least 36,000 new jobs nationwide as personal fitness trainers.

A personal fitness trainer (PFT) offers their clients expertise in safe and effective exercise techniques, rehabilitative exercises, and nutrition. As a PFT, you will have the opportunity to help others find and maintain a healthier way of life. The duties and responsibilities of a personal fitness trainer typically include, but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrating and explaining how to perform various exercises and routines to minimize injuries and improve fitness
  • Watching clients do exercises to ensure that they are using the correct techniques
  • Monitoring clients’ progress and adapting programs as needed
  • Providing alternative exercises during workouts or classes for different levels of fitness and skill
  • Providing clients information and/or resources about nutrition, weight control, and lifestyle issues
  • Explaining and enforcing safety rules and regulations on sports, recreational activities, and the use of exercise equipment
  • Giving emergency first aid if needed

The Personal Fitness Trainer program at ATI specializes in producing technically-qualified, thoroughly-trained fitness professionals. Personal Fitness Trainers can work in a variety of workplaces - gyms, health clubs, recreation centers, yoga and pilates studios, cruise ships, resorts, educational institutions, and in private practices. As a personal fitness trainer you may also choose to be self-employed. If you choose to work as your own boss, you can set your own hours, working however much you desire. Even if you do work for a gym or company, fitness trainers usually enjoy scheduling flexibility, and most have some freedom to choose their hours and how many clients to work with in one week.

As a PFT you can say goodbye to sitting behind a computer all day! As a fitness professional, your job is all about being active, and you get to make the gym your office. Before you begin your workday, or after it’s over, you can stay and enjoy your “office” for yourself! The built-in benefit of this career is that by helping others adopt and maintain healthy exercise routines and healthful eating habits, you will inevitably practice what you preach. As a fitness professional, you will set the example for your clients: the healthier you are, the better the example!
